I am pasting a link to a pdf article written by Dr. Mercola. In it, he describes how the focus of care is to support the lungs and boost your immune system. He describes research done on SARS virus with quercetin, resveratrol, n-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), vitamin D3 and other support. I have put together a protocol I am using with my family and the supplements I am recommending to patients. Dr. Toby's Immune Support. You can use this link here or go to the handout section of this website to download other supporting materials.
Dr. Mercola's article - Essential Nutrition to Protect Yourself From The Corona Virus.
He says According to Peter Horby, professor of emerging infectious diseases and global health at the Centre of Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford, Novel Coranavirus Infected Pneumonia (NCIP) has the hallmark signs of "classic viral pneumonia," and since there are currently no antivirals available for NCIP, the focus of care is to support the lungs and other organs until the patient recovers.
I pasted an abstract below which looks at the importance of Vitamin D status and viral pneumonia in children. Even though children are effected less by the Covid-19 virus, this supports the idea that vitamin D3 sufficiency is very important to help decrease the chances of developing viral pneumonia.
Further, there are other studies like the one below which again point to the benefits of having enough vitamin D3. It is thought that in addition to the cold dry air supporting the spread of viruses during the winter that seasonal vitamin D3 plays a large role as well in the host's innate immune system. I recommend, based on frequent lab assessments that most adults need to be taking at least 5,000 IU vitamin D3 to get levels up to the recommended 60 to 80 ng/ml levels.
As scited by Mercola, research published in 2009 pointed suggests fatality rates during the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic were influenced by season, with greater numbers of people dying during the winter than the summer. According to the authors:
"Deaths during the 1918–1919 influenza pandemic have been linked to both the influenza virus and secondary bacterial lung infections. Case fatality rates and percentage of influenza cases complicated by pneumonia were available from survey data for twelve United States locations in the 1918–1919 pandemic.
This study analyzes case fatality rates and cases complicated by pneumonia with respect to estimated summertime and wintertime solar ultraviolet-B (UVB) doses as indicators of population mean vitamin D status.
Substantial correlations were found for associations of July UVB dose with case fatality rates and rates of pneumonia as a complication of influenza. Similar results were found for wintertime UVB. Vitamin D upregulates production of human cathelicidin, LL-37, which has both antimicrobial and antiendotoxin activities.
Vitamin D also reduces the production of proinflammatory cytokines, which could also explain some of the benefit of vitamin D since H1N1 infection gives rise to a cytokine storm."
QUERCETIN: is a powerful immune booster and broad-spectrum antiviral. It also inhibits the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which may be beneficial since serious COVID-19 infection and subsequent death appears to be due to cytokine storm activity. Please read the article provided by Dr. Mercola on Quercetin as he outlines the research on the beneficial aspects of quercetin in helping to decrease viral replication while also potentially decreasing the likelihood of developing the detrimental effects pneumonia and cytokine storm.
Also high on my list is using a liposomal Cat's Claw and monolaurin supplement for its antiviral effects. Integrated Chemists of the Philippines also recently published information about a proposed study by Dr. Mary Newport on lauric acid and its derivative, monolaurin. As noted in this post:"Lauric acid is a medium-chain fatty acid which makes up about 50% of coconut oil; monolaurin is a metabolite that is naturally produced by the body's own enzymes upon ingestion of coconut oil and is also available in pure form as a supplement … Several in vitro, animal, and human studies support the potential of coconut oil, lauric acid and its derivatives as effective and safe agents against a virus like nCoV-2019. Mechanistic studies on other viruses show that at least three mechanisms may be operating. Given the considerable scientific evidence for the antiviral activity of coconut oil, lauric acid and its derivatives and their general safety, and the absence of a cure for nCoV-2019, we urge that clinical studies be conducted among patients who have been infected with nCoV-2019 …
I also feel that NAC, lipoic acid (ALA) should also be implemented in an aproach to prevent and decrease the inflammation associated with viral pneumonia. NAC encourages glutathione production, thins mucus, lowers your chances of influenza infection and reduces your risk of developing severe bronchitis. Elderberry, Zinc and Selenium are also very important, as is drinking hot green tea, the antioxidants in green tea can help decrease viral replication while also decreasing inflammation.
